ASSESSSMENT OF MOTIVATING FACTORS FOR SUSTAINED USE OF SANITATION PRACTICES AND TECHNOLOGIES IN KYARUMBA SUB COUNTY, KASESE DISTRICT.

Background
At the structural and community levels, seasonal changes and infrastructure shape when and how sanitation technologies are adopted. The study aims to assess the motivating factors for sustained use of sanitation practices and technologies in Kyarumba Sub-County, Kasese District.
Methodology
The study was a descriptive survey in which quantitative data were collected. Data were coded, entered, and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) and Stata computer software.
Results
The majority of the respondents (77.5%) were married, with only 15.8% and 6.7% single and divorced, respectively. Continued use of sanitation facilities was mainly influenced by perceived susceptibility to diseases (62.5%). Other major motivators for sustained use of sanitation facilities and practices were distance to water source (55.8%) and nurturing (53.3%). Other factors influencing sustained adoption of sanitation practices and technologies included: cost of technology (46.7%) and perceived severity of diseases (42.5%); durability of technology (40.8%), age (39.5%), gender (35.5%), social norms (27.5%), and socio-economic status of respondents (25.8%).
Conclusion
Sustainable use of sanitation facilities in households was mainly influenced by perceived susceptibility to diseases, distance to water source, and nurturing. cost of technology, perceived severity of diseases, durability of technology, age, gender, social norms, and socio-economic status of respondents.
Recommendations
There is a need for development stakeholders in Kasese and Kyarumba Sub-County to sensitize the community about the need to break culturally defined gender roles that negatively impact household adoption of good sanitation technologies and practices.
